Safeway adds benefits for LGBT employees

Safeway is making its support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees and shoppers visible with some perks for workers and the communities where its grocery stores are located.

The chain also started a supplier diversity program that supports the inclusion of LGBT suppliers.

The 1,326-store chain has scored 100% for the second year in a row on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index, a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices pertinent to LGBT equality.

“We pride ourselves on embracing and celebrating the rich diversity of our employees, customers and suppliers,” Executive VP Larree Renda.

The chain’s attention to its LGBT employees pays off in marketing value: The stores are listed on many “where to shop” lists compiled by LGBT advocacy groups.
